It has recently come to our attention that in several states, UnitedHealthcare has sent mass letters to physicians informing them that they have been dropped from one or more of their Medicare Advantage products. There are also some reports of other companies engaging in similar activities on a more limited basis.

ASCRS Foundation to offer Resident Travel Grants for Boston 2014!

The ASCRS Foundation is now accepting applications for its2014 Resident Excellence Awards. Ten outstanding ophthalmology residents will be selected to receive a $1,000 travel grant to enable them to attend the ASCRS·ASOA Symposium and Congress in Boston.

In addition to the travel grant, the 2014 winners will receive complimentary meeting registration, a four-night hotel stay, and invitations to select ASCRS leadership and social events.

Congress Raises Debt Ceiling and Ends Government Shutdown

On October 16 , the House and Senate passed a continuing resolution (CR) to restore government funding and raise the nation’s debt limit. ASCRS and our coalition partners in the medical community are now redoubling efforts to have the SGR repealed by the end of the year. Access the New ASCRS Sunshine Act Toolkit

ASCRS has created a Sunshine Act Toolkit to provide members with a better understanding of the Physician Payment Sunshine Act. The Sunshine Act requires manufacturers of drugs, devices, biologicals, or medical supplies covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or the Children’s Health Insurance Program to annually report to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) any payments or transfers of value of more than $10 to physicians or teaching hospitals.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals Makes $50,000 Donation to ASCRS Foundation

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International and Bausch + Lomb marked World Sight Day 2013 with a $50,000 donation to the ASCRS Foundation.

Earmarked to advance the foundation’s educational mission, the donation will enable an expansion of the foundation’s public awareness programs aimed at improving understanding and knowledge of ophthalmology and eye health.

2013 Cornea Fellows Educational Summit in Texas Sold Out

The 2013 Cornea Fellows Educational Summit, scheduled for October 10-13 in Fort Worth, is officially sold out, within three weeks of accepting application. The meeting provides an intensive cornea and external disease program for U.S. cornea fellows as a way to complement their existing training.

The two-day program, which includes both classroom and skills transfer lab components, was developed by the Cornea Society to address education challenges identified by cornea fellowship directors.
