Each month, ASCRS recognizes an EyeConnect Platinum Member for their valuable contributions to the EyeConnect forum. Dr. Gary Wörtz of Lexington, Kentucky is the November recipient based on his engagement points and extensive involvement in the community as an active contributor since 2008.
Dr. Wörtz started participating in EyeConnect while he was chief resident at the University of Kentucky. “For a young aspiring ophthalmologist, I found it so interesting to discuss real-world problems with practicing ophthalmologists with decades more experience,” he said. “My voice was welcomed even as a resident, and I have made some amazing friends through the camaraderie of the community.”
From a young age, Dr. Wörtz knew he wanted to pursue the medical field watching his father and uncle practice internal medicine together. “I saw how much my father enjoyed helping people, and that inspired me to want to do the same and have an impact,” he said. In his third year as a medical student at University of Louisville, Dr. Wörtz witnessed his first cataract surgery and knew he ultimately wanted to be an ophthalmologist.
Since graduating, Dr. Wörtz has performed thousands of cataract and laser procedures, currently serving as chief medical officer of his startup Omega Ophthalmics and practicing at Commonwealth Eye Surgery. With family and faith at the center of his life, he spends as much time outside of his practice fostering both. “I love traveling with my wife and kids and finding new adventures to share together,” he said.
For Dr. Wörtz, EyeConnect has been a place to hear about the everyday experiences of his colleagues; share ideas; discuss new technology; and get curbside consultations for perplexing patients and surgical situations. “Through EyeConnect we have access to some of the most brilliant minds in our field,” he said. “The practical wisdom and collective experience can be leveraged to provide excellent customized advice like no other educational resource I’ve found.”
Join Dr. Wörtz and your peers in the conversation today on EyeConnect, where you will find valuable information on topics such as Cataract/Refractive, Cornea and Retina/Vitreous.
