Former Senator Tom Coburn, MD, will be featured during the ASCRS•ASOA Joint Government Relations Session on Friday, May 5. Dr. Coburn is a former Republican Senator from Oklahoma. He served two terms in the Senate, beginning in 2004. He also served in the House of Representatives from 1995 to 2001. He served on the House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, played a central role in Medicare and health care debates, and worked with ASCRS and the Patient Access Coalition on a patients’ bill of rights.
On Saturday, May 6, the ASCRS Opening General Session will begin with presentations by ASCRS President Kerry D. Solomon, MD, and incoming President Bonnie An Henderson, MD. Dr. Henderson will introduce the 2017 Honored Guests: Luther Fry, MD, and Y.C. Lee, MD.
The Opening General Session will also include the ASCRS Ophthalmology Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, where the chosen inductees will be recognized. Following the Hall of Fame Ceremony, the session will close out with Boris Malyugin, MD, PhD, being awarded the Binkhorst Medal and delivering the Binkhorst Lecture. Dr. Malyugin is a professor of ophthalmology at the European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology and is a board member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
Astronaut Scott Kelly will discuss his year in space during the Science, Medicine and Technology Lecture at the ASCRS Sunday Summit General Session on Sunday, May 7. During his lecture, Mr. Kelly will share lessons on leadership and teamwork, personal stories of perseverance, and the path that led him to secure his place in history.
The Sunday Summit will also have special programming dedicated to the 50th anniversary of phacoemulsification. Other activities are planned throughout the meeting in recognition of this major milestone in ophthalmology.
The prestigious 2017 Charles D. Kelman Innovator Lecture will be delivered by Reay H. Brown, MD, at the ASCRS Innovators General Session on Monday, May 8. Dr. Brown is a distinguished expert in glaucoma and cataract surgery. He has served as chairman of the ASCRS Glaucoma Clinical Committee and is currently the glaucoma editor of EyeWorld magazine.
Lastly, the ASCRS Best of 2017 General Session – held on Tuesday, May 9 – will highlight some of the most important and interesting papers presented at the 2017 ASCRS•ASOA Symposium & Congress, as selected by EyeWorld editorial board members from among the “Best Paper of Session” winners.
