EyeConnect Monthly Platinum Member Spotlight: Dr. Shannon Wong
Each month, ASCRS recognizes an EyeConnect Platinum Member for his/her valuable contributions to the EyeConnect forum. Shannon Wong, MD, of Austin, TX is the May recipient based on his engagement points and extensive involvement in the EyeConnect community.
“I highly recommend EyeConnect for any comprehensive, cornea, cataract, glaucoma or retinal surgeon,” he said. “There is an open exchange of information that helps all practitioners share best practices and provide the best care for our patients.”
An Austin native, Dr. Wong’s career inspiration stemmed at an early age as the son of ophthalmologist Mitchel Wong, MD. After graduating from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, he ultimately completed his residency at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia.
“Medicine and the business behind it is hard work, but once you are able to navigate the minefield of life and medicine, it is a very gratifying and rewarding career,” he said. “It is especially gratifying being in a field where there are so many brilliant people focused on saving and improving vision at the highest level.”
During the past 20 years, Dr. Wong has performed thousands of procedures as part of the Austin Eye Clinic team, which also includes his father. Their practice was the first to perform LASIK in Austin and the father-son team were the first ophthalmologists to provide iLASIK in their city.
For Dr. Wong, life extends beyond the workplace. He enjoys spending his free time learning from his family. “My wife Betty helps me with all aspects of life,” he said. “My three children have a completely different perspective on the world and have taught me to ‘think like a millennial’ to better understand what lies in the future.” A self-proclaimed “amateur videographer,” he has created several YouTube channels.
Hoping to also have a positive impact on the next generation of ophthalmologists, Dr. Wong and his family have founded the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School.
With his continual drive to grow, Dr. Wong has found EyeConnect to be a useful and convenient learning tool. “All topics that involve sharing information about surgical pearls or new technologies—an ever-evolving aspect of our practices—are what I have found most useful,” he said. “I enjoy learning from what I consider the giants in our field.”
