Don’t Miss Out on Grassroots Opportunities During the August Congressional Recess

Attending the annual Alliance of Specialty Medicine Legislative Fly-In is one way for ASCRS and ASOA members to advocate for ophthalmology. The August Congressional recess also offers an excellent opportunity to reach out to your legislators while they are back in their states and districts. Whether you schedule a meeting at your Senator’s local office or invite your Representative to tour your practice, it is important to have your voice be heard on key issues. The full August recess is July 29–September 4; however, this year the Senate delayed the start of its recess by two weeks.

Take the opportunity to urge Congress to work with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to provide regulatory relief from burdens associated with onerous program requirements related to such issues as prior authorization, sunset quality program penalties, narrow provider networks, and compounded drugs; and ask Congress to repeal the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) while bipartisan support and momentum are on our side.

If you haven’t done so already, please visit the ASCRS•ASOA Action Alert Center to ask your legislators to cosponsor and support legislation to repeal IPAB. Thank you to all the members who have already added your voice!

Don’t be shy about contacting your legislators during the recess—or any time. As a constituent, you have the right to discuss issues that are important to you and your patients, also constituents.

If you have questions or need assistance scheduling a meeting with your Senator or Representative, please contact Tami O’Brien, manager of PAC and grassroots, at tobrien@ascrs.org or 703-591-2220.
