As of April 1, 2018, CMS started mailing Medicare beneficiaries their new Medicare cards that will replace Social Security Numbers (SSNs) with a unique Medicare Number. The new cards will be mailed to all Medicare beneficiaries on a rolling basis by geographic location and other factors. The first wave of recipients for the new Medicare cards is newly eligible people with Medicare. See below for more information on the Medicare mailing strategy.
Additionally, CMS is planning a transition period where physicians and practices can use either the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) or the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) to exchange data. The transition period began April 1, 2018, and will run through December 31, 2019. Starting January 1, 2020, practices must submit claims using MBIs (with a few exceptions), no matter what date you performed the service. For more information, visit the links below:
