CMS Announces It Is Considering a Demonstration to Waive MIPS Requirements for Physicians Participating in Certain Medicare Advantage (MA) Alternative Payment Models that Involve Risk

Today, CMS announced it was considering a demonstration project that would exempt physicians from MIPS who participate in certain MA alternative payment models (APMs) that involve financial risk. MACRA allows for participation in MA APMs to count toward physician and group participation thresholds to be eligible for the 5% Advanced APM bonus. CMS notes that several plans are currently developing these models, so the agency is considering the demonstration to exempt physicians who begin participating in them from MIPS, as they would currently still be required to participate in MIPS if the models were not yet approved. CMS has not issued a formal proposal for the demonstration, but is currently collecting information to quantify its potential administrative burden. We will keep you updated.
