As you know, ASCRS continues to advocate for regulatory relief, as well as removal of barriers to specialty care. One of these barriers, also burdensome for physicians, is the use of prior authorization in Medicare Advantage (MA) plans, which was a top issue during July’s ASCRS/Alliance of Specialty Medicine Legislative Fly-In.
Following ASCRS and medical community advocacy, Reps. Phil Roe, MD (R-TN), and Ami Bera, MD (D-CA), have drafted a letter to CMS requesting that the agency “improve how prior authorization works under MA plans.” In the letter, which they plan to send early next month, the Congressmen express their concern that patients may be encountering barriers to timely access to care that are caused by onerous and often unnecessary prior authorization requirements. Reps. Roe and Bera are now circulating the letter to their colleagues in the House, along with a “Dear Colleague” letter asking fellow Representatives to add their signatures to the CMS letter.
