CMS Announces Efforts to Improve the Transparency and Oversight of Accreditation Organizations

This week, CMS announced it was taking steps to improve transparency and oversight of accreditation organizations (AOs) that survey healthcare facilities, including ASCs, on behalf of CMS. To improve transparency and oversight, CMS will publicly post the latest quality-of-care deficiency findings following complaint surveys at facilities accredited by AOs; a list of providers determined by CMS to be out of compliance, with information included on the provider’s AO; and overall performance data for AOs themselves. In addition, CMS is modifying the AO survey validation process to develop a more streamlined approach to determining an AO’s performance and ability to assess facilities’ compliance with CMS regulations. Finally, CMS will also post its annual report to Congress on AOs publicly. The most current report is available on the CMS website.
