On April 1, 2018, CMS started mailing Medicare beneficiaries their new Medicare cards, which began the transition period during which physicians and practices can use either the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) or the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) to exchange data. The transition will run through December 31, 2019. Starting January 1, 2020, practices must submit claims using MBIs (with a few exceptions), no matter what date you performed the service.
CMS continues to mail new cards to new Medicare beneficiaries nationwide and those in Wave 7 states and territories, including: Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, and the Virgin Islands. To check on mailing status, please visit New Medicare Cards.
