House Lawmakers Want CMMI to Run Demo Expanding Physician-Owned Hospitals

Earlier this month, Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee Ranking Member Rep. Michael Burgess, MD (R-TX) and a group of more than 30 of his fellow legislators in the House joined together to request that the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) run a demonstration expanding physician-owned hospitals (POHs).

In their letter to CMS, the legislators note ongoing issues with hospital consolidation and say that because of the high-quality care provided by POHs, including the highest Medicare quality ratings, “it would be beneficial to launch a CMMI demonstration that aims to expand patient access to these quality providers.”

The Affordable Care Act prohibited development of new POHs and limited the expansion of existing ones.
