While your Senators and Representatives are back in their respective states and districts this month, please take the opportunity to meet with them about ophthalmology’s priority legislative issues. As their constituents, it is your right to meet with them—and there’s never been a better time to do so.
During last month’s Alliance of Specialty Medicine Legislative Fly-In, many ASCRS and ASOA members went to Capitol Hill to urge Congress to take action on the following issues. You can do the same thing at home in your state and Congressional district.
- ASCRS is urging Congress to maintain a viable fee-for-service option in Medicare Part B and extend positive physician payment updates to the Medicare physician payment conversion factor, as well as 5% bonus payments for participation in advanced APMs. View the issue brief for background and talking points.
- ASCRS wants increased transparency and accountability—and to reduce the burdens of prior authorization. The bipartisan Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act (H.R. 3107) would streamline prior authorization in the Medicare Advantage program. Check here to see if your Representative has already cosponsored the bill. If not, urge him or her to do so! If so, reach out to say thank you.
- ASCRS urges lawmakers to address barriers to specialty care, including step therapy. Ask your Representative to cosponsor the bipartisan Safe Step Act (H.R. 2279)
Start developing relationships with your elected officials by taking advantage of one-on-one time with them to discuss important issues that affect your practice and patients. Invite them to visit your practice to see firsthand how policies made in Washington play out in real life. If you’re not sure who your members of Congress are, you can find a list of Senators by state here and enter your ZIP code here to find your district’s Representative. If you have any questions or need assistance setting up a meeting, please contact Tami O’Brien, ASCRS manager of PAC and grassroots, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 703-788-5798.
