CMS Office of the Actuary Releases 2018–2027 Projections of National Health Expenditures; Medicare Projected Highest Growth Rate Among Major Payers

This week, CMS released the Office of the Actuary National Health Expenditures Report, which estimates that total healthcare spending growth will average 5.5% annually from 2018 to 2027. Medicare spending growth is projected to average 7.4% over the same period—the fastest rate among the major payers, due to enrollment growth in Medicare, as baby boomers continue to age into the program and use covered services. Spending growth for prescription drugs is projected to accelerate and average 5.6% from 2018 to 2027 as a result of faster utilization growth.
