This week, ASCRS submitted comments in support of the CMS proposed rule that will streamline the prior authorization process in Medicare Part D plans by updating electronic prescribing standards, thereby allowing practices to complete prior authorizations online. The proposed rule was a result of ASCRS and medical community advocacy to CMS to reduce burdens associated with prior authorization and require standardized forms and electronic transactions.
While we support the proposal, we encourage CMS to make continued changes to the prior authorization process in Medicare Part D to ensure patient health outcomes are not being negatively impacted. Specifically, we ask for selective use of prior authorization for evidence-based treatments and to allow providers “peer-to-peer” dialogs with a specialist in the same or similar discipline. We will alert members when the final rule is released.
