eyeContacts in Action: Fly-In Meeting Results in Practice Visit from Congressman

Earlier this week, Rep. Michael Guest (R-MS) spent some time at the Mississippi Vision Correction Center at the invitation of ASOA member Gretchen Kimble. Rep. Guest and Kimble became acquainted in July on Capitol Hill at the annual Alliance of Specialty Medicine Legislative Fly-In, during which more than 40 ASCRS and ASOA members met with legislators from their home states and districts to lobby for key policy priorities.

As any effective advocate would, Kimble invited her Congressman to visit her clinic to see for himself an ophthalmology practice in action—as well as how legislation and regulations can affect doctors, staff, and patients. She repeated the invitation in a thank you email following her Fly-In meeting with Rep. Guest and soon after, was contacted to schedule a visit.

During his time at the Mississippi Vision Correction Center, Rep. Guest toured the entire practice and spoke with multiple employees and patients, as well as ASCRS members Marc Richardson, MD, and L. Brannon Aden, MD. Kimble and Rep. Guest briefly discussed the importance of maintaining a Medicare Part B fee-for-service option, as well as the recently released 2020 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule. The Congressman spent about 45 minutes at the practice and will return to Washington, D.C., with a wealth of information and real stories about how decisions made on Capitol Hill actually impact ophthalmology patients and the entire team responsible for their care.

ASCRS ASOA eyeContacts are engaged with elected officials in their communities. Whether it be discussing issues with their Senator while hand-delivering an eyePAC check on behalf of the society, inviting their Representative to visit their practice, hosting a fundraiser for a key candidate, or simply responding to an ASCRS grassroots action alert, eyeContacts are active to the extent that suits their availability and comfort level.
