ASCRS President Emphasizes New Initiative
In a letter to ASCRS membership this week, President Vance Thompson, MD, wrote in detail about the upcoming ASCRS Business of Refractive Cataract Surgery Summit.
The Summit features in-person instruction September 27–28 in Irving, Texas, just outside of Dallas, in an intimate, small-group setting where attendees will receive insider instruction about the business side of successfully incorporating advanced-technology IOLs into practice. It also includes exclusive access to an extensive resource library that holds everything from customizable educational materials and forms to checklists and more.
Dr. Thompson wrote: “The ASCRS Business of Refractive Cataract Surgery Summit brings together doctors and business leaders of practices that are healthy because they have really figured out how to deliver this hybrid ‘future of the practice of medicine,’ consisting of both patient-pay and insurance-based services.”

ASCRS Participates in Legislative Fly-In
ASCRS had the largest delegation of representatives at the Alliance of Specialty Medicine’s 2024 Capitol Hill Advocacy Conference Monday and Tuesday of this week.
A diverse group of more than two dozen individuals, including five ASCRS/YES Legislative Fly-In Scholarship recipients, as well as members of ASOA, convened in Washington, D.C., where they met with and heard from legislators and regulatory officials on a number of topics, including physician payment, prior authorization, and more.
Members visited their legislators’ Capitol Hill offices to urge Congress to stop the pending 2.8% cut to the 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, address problems with prior authorization and step therapy, and increase the number of residency slots across the country to address the shortage of specialty physicians. Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), an ophthalmologist, stopped by the ASCRS closing night dinner to greet our members and provide an outlook for healthcare legislation in the last few months of the 118th Congress.
