Poster Abstract
PurposeTo assess the prevalence of keratoconus in patients with more than 2 dioptres of astigmatism by using the Tomey TMS4.
Methods
A retrospective analysis of corneal topography was done among 125 eyes of 68 patients with more than 2 diopters of astigmatism. The study has 34 men and 34 women. Postoperative patients and those with pterygium are excluded from the study. The images were screened for their similarity with keratoconus by using Klyce/Maeda index and Smolek/Klyce index.
Results
According to Klyce/Maeda index, 39 of 125 eyes (31.2%) showed topographic changes consistent with keratoconus. According to Smolek/Klyce index, 47 of 125 eyes (37.6%) showed topographic changes consistent with keratoconus. Among them, 12.8% were keratoconus suspects and 24.8% were categorized as keratoconus.
Conclusion
Prevalence of keratoconus may be more than expected in the Indian population. In our study, almost 1/3 of patients had signs of keratoconus. Screening of all patients having more than 2 dioptres of astigmatism may be helpful to detect subclinical keratoconus patients in the population. Early identification and cross-linking may be advantageous to stop the progression of the disease.
