Starting April 2018, CMS will begin mailing new Medicare cards that will replace Social Security Numbers (SSNs) with a unique Medicare Number.
The new cards will be mailed to all Medicare beneficiaries on a rolling basis by geographic location and other factors. CMS is planning a transition period where you can use either the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) or the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) to exchange data. The transition period will begin April 1, 2018, and run through December 31, 2019. Starting January 1, 2020, you must submit claims using MBIs (with a few exceptions), no matter what date you performed the service. For more information, visit the links below:
