This week, South Carolina ophthalmologist and ASCRS member John Hazelton, MD, met with Rep. Tom Rice (R-SC) to deliver a check for his re-election campaign on behalf of the ASCRS eyePAC political action committee. Rep. Rice is a member of the House Ways and Means (W&M) Committee, which has jurisdiction over Medicare.
For their meeting, Rep. Rice visited Dr. Hazelton’s practice, Coastal Eye Group, in Murrells Inlet. Dr. Hazelton showed Rep. Rice around the office, presented him with the eyePAC contribution, and “discussed in detail our legislative concerns about MACRA.” An ASCRS eyeContact grassroots advocate, Dr. Hazelton focused the conversation on extending positive physician payment updates to the Medicare physician payment conversion factor included in MACRA, as well as 5% bonus payments for participation in advanced APMs, and improving the Quality Payment Program to ensure opportunities and adequate incentives for specialists.
ASCRS and ASOA eyeContacts are members who engage with elected officials in their communities, taking opportunities like this face-to-face meeting to discuss important policy issues related to ophthalmology. Whether it be covering the issues with their senator while hand-delivering an eyePAC contribution on behalf of the society, inviting their representative to visit their practice, hosting a fundraiser for a key candidate, or simply responding to an ASCRS grassroots action alert, eyeContacts are active to the extent that suits their availability and comfort level.
